Shots Fired After Vehicle Chase in Harlingen; Police Seek Armed Suspect
HARLINGEN, Texas — Authorities are investigating an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a high-speed vehicle chase and reported gunfire in Harlingen on Christmas Day.
According to the Harlingen Police Department, the incident unfolded along Commerce Street near an H-E-B store and continued toward the area near Peter Piper Pizza before ending at a major intersection on East Harrison Avenue.
Police said the chase concluded Friday afternoon at the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Business 77, where multiple law enforcement agencies converged. Officers from Harlingen police, Cameron County authorities, Texas Department of Public Safety, and emergency medical services responded to the scene. Crime scene tape was used to close off the intersection as investigators worked.
In a news release, police identified Andres Arizmendi as a suspect wanted in connection with an aggravated assault involving a family member. Authorities said Arizmendi fled the scene and is believed to be armed and dangerous. The public is urged not to approach him and to contact law enforcement with any information regarding his whereabouts.
A city spokesperson confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the general public and stated that all law enforcement personnel involved are safe.
Officials advised motorists to avoid the area as traffic was rerouted during the investigation.
